Work Zone Safety Awareness Week is coming to Lexington

Work Zone: construction crew working on a road

The Work Zone Safety Awareness Week is coming, but what are the dates? Why is there an awareness week? What should residents near The Summit expect?

The weather is getting warmer which means the start of constant construction in and around Lexington will start to grow. April is the unofficial start of the construction season for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.

Work Zone: construction crew working on a roadApril 8 through April 12 is the National Work Zone Awareness Week and the Cabinet invites residents to participate in their “Glow Orange Kentucky” initiative. This is an annual campaign from KYTC to show visible community support for raising work zone awareness. They invite residents to help in assisting road crews and making the roadways safer for workers.

KYTC is urging companies and individuals to assist with this campaign by pledging to illuminate the following with the color orange of this particular week:

  • Buildings
  • Landmarks
  • Bridges
  • Structures
  • Homes

If you or your company plant to participate in this campaign, the KYTC asks that you take a photo and post it to their Facebook or Twitter account and use the hashtag #glowky.

There is a pledge form the cabinet is urging people to fill out if they plan to participate. You can fill that form out here.

The goal of this initiative is to encourage motorists to drive without distractions and to slow down once entering a work zone.
